My Camera and Microphone Worked Everywhere Except One Video Call App
I joined a video call two minutes late, already a little flustered, only to find the app confidently informing everyone else that I had no camera and no microphone connected at all — on the exact same laptop where I'd tested both, successfully, in a different app not ten minutes earlier.
The Problem
It wasn't a general hardware failure, which at least ruled out the most alarming possibility immediately. My camera worked perfectly in the Windows Camera app. My microphone worked fine in a voice recorder I tested on a hunch. It was specifically this one video call app, and only this one, that seemed convinced neither device existed at all, showing a black square and a muted, greyed-out microphone icon no matter what I clicked.
What I Initially Thought
My first assumption was that the app itself was simply broken or badly built, glitching on this particular call for reasons I'd never fully understand, and that restarting it enough times might eventually shake it loose. I restarted the app twice, restarted the laptop once for good measure, and got the exact same "no camera detected" result every single time, which started to feel less like a random glitch and more like something specific and consistent.

Flipping both toggles back on resolved it instantly — no restart needed this time, no further troubleshooting, just the camera and microphone becoming available inside the app within seconds of the permission being granted. It was almost anticlimactic after how confused I'd been about why one specific app, and only that one, seemed to have a completely different relationship with hardware every other app could access without issue.
What stuck with me afterward was how easy it would have been to keep looking in entirely the wrong place — inside the app's own audio and video settings, digging through dropdown menus for a device selector that was never actually the problem, when the real block was happening one full layer above the app, at the operating system's permission level instead.

When a specific app has a hardware problem that other apps don't share, I check Windows privacy settings for camera and microphone access first now, before assuming the issue lives inside that particular app's own settings. It's a quick check, and it would have saved me a genuinely stressful couple of minutes scrambling right at the start of a call I was already running late for.
The Lesson
When one specific app misbehaves while everything else using the same hardware works fine, the problem is often sitting one layer above the app itself, in a permission or setting the app has no control over and can't explain from inside its own interface. I'd been looking for the answer entirely inside the wrong place, purely because that's where I assumed a problem "inside an app" logically had to live.
