My external monitor started intermittently losing signal — a brief flash to black, then back, then sometimes a colored flicker across the whole picture before it stabilized again. It happened often enough to be genuinely disruptive, rarely enough that I could never catch it in the exact moment I was looking for a cause.

Where I Started Looking

I suspected the graphics card first, since that felt like the most "serious" possible explanation and therefore, in my head, the most urgent one to rule out. I updated the driver. The flickering continued exactly as before. I suspected the monitor itself next, tested it briefly on a different device, and it seemed to behave the same way there too, though inconsistently enough that I couldn't be fully sure.

An hour in, I'd worked through two fairly involved theories, updated a driver for no real benefit, and hadn't yet touched the one thing actually connecting the two devices.

What Finally Occurred to Me

I finally, almost as an afterthought, tried a different cable — one I had lying around from an old setup, not even a particularly good one, just different from the one currently in use. The flickering stopped completely and immediately. I sat there for a moment feeling a little foolish, since a cable swap takes about ten seconds and I'd spent the better part of an hour on theories that were, in hindsight, considerably more elaborate than the actual cause.

What I Learned

I'd unconsciously ranked my suspects by how technically serious they sounded, rather than by how easy and cheap they were to actually test. A graphics card felt like a bigger, more legitimate problem than "maybe it's just the cable," so I started there, even though testing the cable would have taken a fraction of the time and ruled things out just as definitively.

Cables are also just physically vulnerable in ways that don't always show — a slightly damaged internal wire, a connector that's been bent or flexed one too many times, none of which is visible from the outside the way a cracked case or a bent pin would be. A cable can look completely fine and still be the actual point of failure.

What I Do Differently Now

  • I test the cheapest, easiest explanation first, rather than the one that sounds most technically serious.
  • Swapping a cable is now one of my very first troubleshooting steps for any display, audio, or connectivity issue — before drivers, before settings.
  • I keep a spare cable or two around specifically for this kind of quick elimination test.
  • I try to notice when I'm ranking possible causes by drama rather than by how quickly I could actually test each one.

Looking Back

The lesson wasn't really about cables specifically. It was about the order I chose to investigate things in, which had nothing to do with actual likelihood and everything to do with which explanation felt more serious. Since then, I try to start with whatever's fastest to rule out, not whatever sounds most impressive to have diagnosed.
