What the investigation found
It was a traditional spinning hard drive, five years old, in a machine whose CPU and RAM were otherwise still perfectly reasonable for everyday use. That distinction matters more than people expect. A hard drive is a mechanical device — a spinning platter and a moving arm that has to physically travel to read data. An SSD has no moving parts and reads data almost instantly by comparison. Windows itself, and nearly every app you open, is constantly reading small files from disk, so when that's slow, everything built on top of it feels slow too, no matter how much RAM or CPU power you have.
What changed after the upgrade
After cloning the drive to an SSD, boot time on this exact machine dropped from over four minutes to under 15 seconds. Apps that used to take 10-20 seconds to open opened in a couple of seconds. File Explorer stopped hanging when opening folders with lots of files. The CPU and RAM hadn't changed at all — the drive was the entire bottleneck.
Is it worth it versus buying a new PC?
If the rest of the machine is still reasonable for what you use it for, an SSD upgrade is almost always cheaper than a new computer and delivers most of the perceived speed difference people are actually chasing. It's one of the few hardware upgrades where the real-world improvement genuinely matches the marketing — this case is a fairly typical example of that.
