Maintenance, I've realized, isn't really about fixing things. It's about noticing things early enough that they never actually need fixing in the more dramatic, disruptive sense — catching a fan getting louder before it signals a real airflow problem, catching a drive's warning signs before it fails outright, catching a nearly full disk before it starts breaking things you'd never think to connect back to storage. The whole shape of the work is different. Fixing responds to a crisis. Maintaining tries to make sure the crisis never fully arrives in the first place.

The hardest part, honestly, is that maintenance rarely feels urgent in the moment, because there's usually nothing visibly wrong to react to yet. Fixing a broken computer has an obvious, immediate reward — it works again. Maintaining a working computer has no comparable, immediate payoff, since the entire point is that nothing dramatic ever happens at all. It took me a long time to trust that the absence of a crisis was itself the actual result, rather than evidence that the effort hadn't been necessary in the first place.
