How to Factory Reset a Dell Using SupportAssist OS Recovery

A recovery environment built into the machine, independent of Windows — useful when Windows itself won't start.

Before you start: save any open work and note down what you were doing when the problem started — that context helps if you need to search further or ask for help.
  1. Back up anything you can reach first if at all possible — a factory reset through the recovery partition can remove personal files depending on which option you choose, and this can't be undone once started.
  2. If Windows still starts normally, prefer Windows' own Reset this PC first (Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC) — it's simpler and gives you the option to keep your files, which SupportAssist OS Recovery's deeper reset does not.
  3. If Windows won't start, or you specifically need Dell's tool: restart the Dell and tap F12 repeatedly right after powering on, then select "SupportAssist OS Recovery" from the boot menu that appears.
  4. From the SupportAssist OS Recovery home page, use "Scan Hardware" and "Startup Repair" first if you're not certain a full reset is actually necessary — these can fix many boot problems without wiping anything.
  5. If a full reset is genuinely what you need, select the Reset tile, choose "Reset to factory settings," and follow the prompts — this reinstalls Windows and Dell's original factory software from the recovery partition, restoring the machine to how it shipped.
  6. On Dell laptops from before roughly 2016, this same recovery may instead be reached with Ctrl+F11 at the Dell logo rather than through SupportAssist — if F12 doesn't show the option, this older method is worth trying.
