How to Factory Reset an MSI Using the Recovery Partition

  1. Back up anything you can reach first if at all possible — a factory reset through the recovery partition removes personal files and installed programs, and this can't be undone once started.
  2. If Windows still starts normally, prefer Windows' own Reset this PC first (Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC) — it's simpler and gives you the option to keep your files, which the MSI Recovery System's factory reset does not.
  3. If Windows won't start, or you specifically need MSI's tool: restart the MSI and tap F3 repeatedly right after powering on — this is the most common recovery key on MSI laptops, though some models use F11 instead, so try both if the first doesn't bring up a menu.
  4. Keep the laptop plugged into power throughout — MSI specifically recommends this, since an interrupted recovery from power loss can leave the system in a worse state than before.
  5. From the recovery menu, select Troubleshoot > "Restore MSI Factory Settings," then "System Partition Recovery" to begin the full reset.
  6. If neither F3 nor F11 brings up the recovery menu, the partition may be missing or damaged — Windows' own Reset this PC (if it can still start) or MSI's support site for recovery media are the remaining options.
