How to Factory Reset or Recover a Surface

Surface doesn't use a traditional recovery-partition F-key like other brands — the right method depends on whether Windows still starts at all.

Before you start: save any open work and note down what you were doing when the problem started — that context helps if you need to search further or ask for help.
  1. Back up anything you can reach first if at all possible — every option below can remove personal files, and this can't be undone once started.
  2. If the Surface boots but is unstable, start with Windows' own Reset this PC (Settings > System > Recovery > Reset this PC) — it's the simplest option, and "Keep my files" may preserve personal files even though apps and settings still get removed.
  3. If Windows boots but you suspect system files themselves are damaged, use Reset this PC with the "Cloud download" option specifically — it fetches a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft rather than reusing potentially damaged local files.
  4. If Windows won't start at all, you'll need Microsoft's official Surface Recovery Image instead: from another working computer, go to Microsoft's Surface Recovery Image page, sign in, and enter your Surface's serial number to get the correct image — each Surface model has its own specific recovery image, so don't use one intended for a different model.
  5. Format a USB drive (16GB or 32GB, not larger) as FAT32, extract the downloaded recovery files to its root, then boot the Surface from it: with the Surface fully shut down, hold Volume Down and press Power, keeping Volume Down held until the Surface logo appears. This is a different button than the one used to enter UEFI settings (Volume Up), so it's worth double-checking you're pressing the right one.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to recover from the USB drive — this is the most disruptive option and typically removes the installed system and personal data, so it's meant for when nothing less drastic will get the Surface working again.
