Windows Search Not Working

The Start menu or File Explorer search box either finds nothing at all, or misses files you know exist.

Before you start: save any open work and note down what you were doing when the problem started — that context helps if you need to search further or ask for help.
  1. Restart Windows Explorer first, for a quick, low-effort attempt: Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) > find "Windows Explorer" under Processes > Restart. This alone clears a surprising share of temporary search glitches.
  2. Check whether you're on Classic or Enhanced indexing mode: Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows > Find my files. Classic mode only indexes your libraries and a handful of default folders — if your files live in a custom location or a secondary drive, Enhanced mode is what actually covers your whole PC.
  3. Confirm the specific folder you're searching in is actually included: Indexing Options (search for it in the Start menu) > Modify, and check that the relevant location has a checkmark.
  4. Restart the Windows Search service directly: Windows+R, type services.msc, find "Windows Search," right-click, and choose Restart.
  5. Run the built-in Search and Indexing troubleshooter: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Search and Indexing.
  6. If none of that helps, rebuild the index from scratch: Indexing Options > Advanced > Rebuild. This can take a genuinely long time for a large drive, since it reprocesses everything rather than fixing just what's broken — let it run in the background rather than assuming it's stuck.
  7. Run sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth as a last resort, in case corrupted system files are affecting the search service itself rather than just the index.
